July NPDs and the phantom price cut
Here are the numbers that matter: Wii sold 555,000 units, PS3 sold 224,900 units and the 360 sold 204,800 units. Hello! Microsoft, the consumer have spoke and your fake price cut didn't get noticed. Normally when you drop the price of your console it should improve sales. Microsoft actually sold less consoles in July then the prior month after dropping the price of the Pro model by $50. Maybe announcing a 60GB model right after the price cut on the 20GB wasn't the smartest idea. Maybe those leaked reports that the 60GB model was dropping to $299 in September wasn't so helpful either.
Microsoft can hang it's head high when it comes to selling games. The 360 had three titles in the top ten and was lead by NCAA Football '09 selling 397,600 copies. Microsoft also managed to sell more copies of Soul Caliber IV for the 360 than the PS3. Microsoft can take some relief that they sold as many copies of NCAA '09. It shows that even though the PS3 is outselling the 360, the dual console folks are still supporting the 360 better than the PS3.
Nintendo can take pride in the fact they they own the US gaming market selling 555,000 Wii, 608,000 DS, and half of the top ten games were on one of their platforms. Nintendo may have gotten some flack for abandoning their hard core audience as E3 but it's their casual market consumers that keep buying their products. Nintendo has won the soccer moms and the hipster dads out there.
Sony should be pleased that they sold as many consoles as they did last month. A large drop off should be expected but at $399 they are still selling more consoles at that price than Microsoft did last year at the same price point. Sony is still losing the multiplatform game contest with Microsoft but by next year Sony may be able to pull ahead of Microsoft. Sony will eventually cut the price of the PS3 again and when they do they very well may start converting those folks that have been buying the PS2 in it's sixth and seventh year.
In all honesty the only contest here is for second place. It's annoying to see Microsoft screw this contest up as badly as they have. Microsoft had a nice big lead early but their quest to be profitable got in their way of beating Sony. Last year when Microsoft dropped the price of the 360 from $399 to $349 they saw a 100,000 unit increase in sales. This time around they actually sold less systems. Considering top analysts, even the NPD Group, thought the 360 would sell in the low 300,000s selling barely 200,000 has to be a slap in the face of Microsoft and the analysts. Microsoft is losing this generation and it's because of neglect from the people running the business. Robbie Bach, Dan Mattrick, and Shane Kim should all be fired for blowing Microsoft's lead and failing in Europe.

I wonder if folks are buying the PS3 for the Blue-Ray aspect. I know I did. I hardly play any games on it, maybe some GTA4 when i get some free Living room time. If microsoft had produced a quality HD-DVD player or even now produced a quality Blue-ray player version of the 360 - I think you'll see the PS3 dropping off again.
