Too Human Impressions
It's a bit unfortunate that Too Human has been handled as poorly as it has with more press about the developer and it's outspoken director. That said Too Human the game is a good action game with innovative controls, beautiful graphics and a new twist to a very old story. Too Human is the story of Nordic god Balder and the Aesir in a futuristic sci-fi future. The earth is in an eternal winter and the human race is in a losing battle against an army of machines. The Aesir are cybernetic enhanced humans that have stepped up to protect humanity.
There are five different classes in Too Human: Berserker, Defender, Champion, Commando and Bio-engineer. Each class has it's own unique fighting style. The Berserker is a melee specialist but doesn't have much defensive ability. The Defender can take more hits but doesn't do that much damage. The Comando is a range specialist using guns as it's main weapon. The Bioengineer can regenerate health but isn't very offensive minded.
The most balanced character is the Champion and I highly recommend you play as the champion your first time through. As the Champion you are good with the gun and the sword but you specialize in air attacks. These air attacks are you jumping in the air and hanging there for a few second inflicting sword attacks on enemies. Early in the game you will choose to either go down a cybernetic or human path. The human path is more for twitch combat while cybernetic is for the RPG folks.
The games plays out as a loot grabbing game where you are constantly getting new items from killing enemies and upgrading your equipment. As you level up you are able to start using better armor and weapons. Most armor can be just picked up and warn but the best weapons and armor are from designs you you pick up in battle. To apply the best armor you need to go to Idunn's cybernetics lab in Asgard and for the best weapons you see Tyr's workshop in Asgard to build then for you. There is a bounty cost but you pick up a ton of bounty in the game to cover the cost.
Now in most games like this you will be hitting X or Y to swing your sword. In this game to melee attack you move your right analog stick towards the enemy. It does take a little while to get used to but once you do it is very rewarding to rack up large combo multipliers. You also have the ability to perform finishers by pointing both analog sticks at an enemy. Once you earn enough combo points you are given a ruiner. The first level ruiner is an explosion that knocks down all the enemies near you. The second level is an animal that performs a stronger attack and kills more enemies. As you progress through the game you can create stronger ruiners but you can also enable a battle cry. The battle cry allows you to deal more damage for a limited amount of time.
As you level up in the game you will earn points to apply to your skill tree. The basic tree allows you to assign points to your melee, range and specialty attacks. As you assign more points towards one of the trees you eventually have to choose to only go down to one path. As you assign points you will level up your ruiner and eventually open up a battle cry. You can also assign points down a specific cybernetic or human path depending on how you make that choice.
What I consider a good game is one that is fun to play and I'm disappointed when the game is over. It's like finishing a good book and wishing you could just stay in that world a little longer. For me Too Human is that game. I love the combat and the loot available in the game. I'm excited to find all the pieces to my current armor eventually get some elite armor pieces. There are two more games coming out in the franchise and I'm excited to play them. I'm even more excited that my armor and weapons will carry over to the next game.
