August NPDs Already?
I have to admit I wasn't expecting the August NPDs this quickly but here we go. The Wii sold 453,000 units, Xbox 360 sold 195,200 units and the PS3 sold 185,400 units. Every console saw a drop in sales this month but Sony has be be concerned the most. The Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 this month and with a significant price cut from Microsoft expect to see the Xbox 360 outsell the PS3 for the rest of the year.
Nintendo had another very solid month selling 453,000 unis and four games in the top 10 lead by Wii Fit selling 394,900 units and finishing fourth overall. This month we saw a 102,000 unit drop from last month for the Wii. I think that Nintendo won't sweat this drop since all this really means is units are sitting on store shelves a few more hours than before. I think that the fact Madden on the Wii sold only 115,000 units shows that either Wii owners are buying Madden for their PS2 or some other console.
Microsoft will be pleased that they saw only a minor drop in sales and sold over a million copies of Madden. They also saw good sales for Soul Caliber 4 and Too Human. With all the price drop information leaked I'm surprised anyone bothered to buy a 360 in August. I expect to see a 100,000 unit increase for the Xbox 360 next month because of the price cut. That would be about the same bump Microsoft got from last year's price drop. Microsoft has to be very pleased that they managed to almost sell twice as many copies of Madden for the 360 than the PS3. The fact that they beat Sony in sales of Soul Caliber 4 supports Namco's decision to bring this former exclusive to the 360.
Sony as usual is living in their own fantasy world. This month's spin from Sony is that they saw "a 38% higher attach rate than Xbox 360" for Soul Caliber 4 and "a 33% higher attach rate than Xbox 360" for Madden. Well I guess Microsoft should have tried to sell more than one million copies of Madden. Sony saw 643,000 copies of Madden sold which is a 300,000 unit increase from last year. Sony did see a 200,000 unit drop for Madden on the PS2 so it would seem those PS2 users have migrated over to the PS3. Unfortunately for Sony those were the only two titles for their game consoles in the top ten.
Every year the 360 has been on the market they have done extremely well in sales, selling around 2 million consoles in November and December of the past two years. Combine a price drop with the release of some high anticipated sequels and sales should go through the roof. I expect to see Microsoft outsell the PS3 the remainder of the year and compete well with the Wii. Sony needs to cut the price of the PS3 to stay competitive during the holiday season but I do not think Sony can afford to drop their price.
