Update: Xbox 360 outsells Wii and PS3 in Japan

The previous week's sales numbers for hardware consoles has been release and the 360 has outsold the PS3 and the Wii in Japan.  The 360 sold 28,681 units, the Wii sold 27,057 units and the PS3 sold 8,050 units.  This spike comes after Microsoft announced that they were sold out after the release of Tales of Vesperia last month.  Microsoft also announced a price drop for all 360 models in Japan.

Considering Microsoft was averaging around 5,000 consoles sold per week in Japan this jump is very surprising since it wasn't associated to a new game release.  It will be interesting to see if Microsoft anticipated another spike in sales or if the 360 starts seeing sales closer to the PS3 which sells on average of about 10,000 units per week.  This generation the 360 has had more RPGs, the preferred game type in Japan, than any other  current generation game console.  Now that the 360's price has dropped again and the reliability issue is resolved maybe the Japanese consumers are willing to take a chance on the American console.

Update:  The new Square Enix RPG Infinite Undiscovery released last week for the Xbox 360.  The game managed to sell 86,708 copies in it's first week of sales.  It seems that the Xbox 360 has now surpassed 700,000 units sold in Japan.  That may not seam like alot from US standards but Japan has a much smaller population and the original Xbox never broke the half million mark.
