October NPDs kinda like September NPDs
Update: Seems I forgot to post this article about the October NPDs. It's been a busy couple weeks so I can understand why i forgot to post this article.
Nintendo must be pushing more consoles to the US because 803,000 Wiis were sold last month. The Xbox 360 sold 371,000 consoles and Sony sold 190,000 consoles. Only the Wii and the Xbox 360 saw a jump in console sales in October but I'm sure Sony will celebrate their increased sales compared to last year. I have to say I'm a little surprised Fable 2 only sold 790,000 copies but it was a late month release. It was only on sale for 10 days of October so I hope to see another big sales total in November.
The Wii is still selling like crazy and the Nintendo games for the Wii are the only Wii games on the top ten this month. Wii Fit is still selling well moving 487,000 units while Mario kart and Wii Play round out the other Wii games on the top ten list. I find it interesting that 803,000 consoles were sold yet only 1,052,000 games were sold among the top selling Wii games. Considering the 360 sold 371,00 consoles and 1,827,00 it's clear that 360 owners play games and Wii owners own a Wii.
Microsoft is still benefiting from their recent price cut selling just enough consoles to pass Sony in 2008 sales in the US. After Sony's good start to the year Microsoft has stayed the course and is now in position to put some real distance between itself and the PS3. With the "weak" economy it seems that gamers have endured and more 360s, PS3 and Wiis were sold in October of 2008 than his month in 2007. Microsoft saw five games in the top ten lead by Fable 2 selling 790,000 copies, Fallout 3 selling 375,000 copies, Saints Row 3 with 270,00 copies, NBA 2K9 at 202,000 and Dead Space selling 193,000 copies. That is a lot of games being sold.
Sony will be pleased their sales are marginally better than last year and they had two games break the top ten list. SOCOM is the PlayStation's best known online shooter so it wasn't too horrible to see it only sell 231,000 copies. The brand has dropped off lately and has been infected by cheaters which has only shrunk he community. Still the largest disappointment has to be Little Big Planet's sales numbers. One has to think the false launch of this game has hurt sales. The game got pulled at the 11th hour because it contained verses from the Koran in the game's soundtrack, which is frowned upon my devote Muslims. Many people felt this game would be the savior for the PS3 this generation. That doesn't seem to be the case.
Earlier on in the year there was a certain element in games media and forums that questioned if 2008 would be the year that the PS3 would surpass the Xbox 360 in the US. Earlier in the year Sony was selling at a much better clip than the 360 and it was openly asked if the 360 would ever regain it's second place standing. I think it's safe to say that the PS3 will never pass the Xbox 360 in the US. It is clear that Microsoft's lead is just too large for Sony to surpass since Microsoft has passed 11,610,000 console sold in the US and the PS3 is only at 5,685,200 units sold at retail. For those that argue the PS3 has a 10 year life cycle, they are sadly misguided. The PS2 isn't dead but it's clear that development for the PS2 has stopped and I seriously doubt it will make it to 2011 and have a ten year life cycle.
Sony's unwillingness to drop the price of the PS3 this year should effectively kill the sales of the PS3 this holiday season. Traditionally you double October sales to estimate November sales and then you double November sales to estimate December sales. This would mean the PS3 should sell 400,000 in November and 800,000 in December while the Xbox 360 should sell 700,00 in November and 1,400,000 in December. If the Wii can meet demand you could see 1,600,000 in November and 3,200,000 in December but I don't see Nintendo getting 5,000,000 console to the US for the holidays.
Next month it will be interesting to see how Gears 2, Resistance 2, Fallout 3, Fable 2, Little Big Planet and Left 4 Dead perform. We already know Gears 2 sold 2 million copies but how will the other big titles fair in November? Will Resistance 2 break a million copies sold? Will Fallout 3 surpass Fable 2 in November? Tune back here in a month to find out.
