Video Game Holiday

So over the past Thanksgiving holiday I spent it with my family in Milwaukee.  I think I visit maybe twice a year now that I've got kids but it's always an enjoyable trip.  It's a six hour drive now that I have kids and we seem to spend a good hour buying gas, food and stopping to use the restroom.  Since I'm in a modern family that means I packe the portable DVD player, laptop, MP3 player (his and hers), Nintendo DS,  digital camera, DVD recorder and all the required wires and batteries.  Amazingly we have room for the ourselves and the dog in the minivan.

This trip has been a bit different because I wasn't the only one bring their toys to town.  My sister Nicole and her fiance both brought Nintendo DS potables and I learned my other sister and my niece both have Zunes.  Unfortunately I somehow forgot to pack my DS so I wasn't able to play networked scrabble or connect 4 with them.  I did end up playing my wife at checkers on our Zunes since the device supports networked gaming.  It was an interesting site to see us all playing or listening to our portable devices.

Since this was one of the few times a year we are all in the same place we also exchanged gifts for Christmas.  One of my nieces had just got a Wii so she got Mario Party, my oldest sister is getting a DS from my mother and I got a slew of game related items.  It pays to have an amazon gift list because then people know what to get you.  I got the Gears of War novel, Iron Man on BluRay,  Fallout 3 guide, a Marcus Fenix action figure and a Halo flood figure.  The last two items were not on my list but since I blogged about the Gears action figures I got one.

As part of the post-thanksgiving shopping I did happen to score a $30 copy of Dead Space at Target.  Dead Space was one of the more interesting original games to come out this fall.  I had it in my GameFly queue but at that price I decided to pick it up.  I tend to get shoveled with a lot of golf stuff at the holidays.  I don't mind shirts because I can wear a polo to work or out to dinner but I've gotten so many golf balls and trinkets it's nice to get something I actually wanted for a change.
