Game of the Year: Too Human?
While I sit down to figure out which game was my personal GOTY I looked at multiple factors. One of those factors has to be how much time I spent playing the game. Well I spent a whopping 48 days playing Too Human according to 360voice.com so shouldn't this be my choice. I sure did play it a ton so I must have really liked the game. Actually I played Devil May Cry 4 more.
You know what I really did like this game a whole lot. I loved the control scheme using the left and right analog sticks to direct my attacks instead of just mashing a few face buttons. I enjoyed filling lots and lots of machines and never found it dull or repetitive even through there were only four levels. Granted those levels were huge and full of little nooks and crannies to explore.
I do believe this game got a bad wrap because of all the negative exposure it received from 1Up and Mark McDonald. I think the folks at Silicon Knights over reacted to the bad press and should have stayed in the shadows. They should have been more concerned with building a good game instead of defending a bad build. The suit against Epic sure didn't help either their cause. Both of these events just gave the hard core gamers another reason to not like the game.
It does say something when 1 million people download your demo but only a quarter of then buy your game. One may argue that the demo was too long and allowed people to get their fill just playing that one level. You can also argue that once people got a chance to play the game they didn't enjoy the combat or game style.
I think this game has a lot of potential but has too many flaws to considered AAA. It's a real disappointment this game wasn't more polished and the game didn't have more to offer. I have kept my copy hoping that there would be some download love but I can still look forward to the sequel.
