My Favorite games of 2008

Here is a list of the best games I played in 2008.  From reviewing my 360voice blog, the games on this list I have played 228 days this year.  That is just a bit crazy but I do play a lot of games.  Here are a few of the best games I played last year:

Fable 2 - I have often felt this is the Xbox's version of Legend of Zelda franchise with an mature twist.  This game is no  where near the time commitment of a Zelda game but that's a good thing in my book.  It really is the RPG for the casual RPG fan that can be played in 15 hours or 30 depending on how much you want to bite off.

Devil May Cry 4 - This pure action game has a good story, incredible graphics and button mashing joy as you fight your way through the worlds.  The level design gets a bit stale and repeat environments and boss battles can get to be a bit much but as you get more powerful it's nice to see how much easier these battles become.  I played this game for almost two months straight and my son still talks about Devil May Cry on occasion.

Lost Odyssey - Some may get afraid of that 4 disk pack or the fact it's a JRPG but they shouldn't.  This is a very enjoyable game with a nice story and an nice combat system.  It is a bit long and the game's difficult scales up at the end.  I was not able to finish the 4th disk because I got stuck but it was still a very fun game to play.

Gears of War 2 - This one is a no brain'er.  The game is a vast improvement in the campaign with a good story and more environments.  The art is this game is absolutely amazingly detailed and battling through the Locust palace was the best part of the game.  It's too bad the multiplayer is a bit screwed up but I've had better luck than most finding games.

Grand Theft Auto 4 - This game is not as beautiful as most and maybe the game play is a bit stale for vets of the franchise.  For the rest of us this is an amazing ride you will not want to put down.  It is very interesting look at the life of a very bad man.  The story in this game is awesome and the game play is great.

Metal gear Solid 4 - This is a very beautiful game with very long cinematic parts.  it almost feels more like I'm playing through a movie than an actual game.  I only played through the first two acts of the game but will most likely go back and finish the game.

Too Human - Didn't think I'd keep this one off my list did you?  Read my last post if you want my feelings on Too Human.

If you look at this list you'll notice a trend: almost all are sequels.  It is not easy to create new games and it's harder to create new games that get large appeal.  Sure there are a couple big name games I've left off this list but that's because I didn't play them.  I hope to play Little Big Planet and Left for Dead eventually but they didn't make it into my game console yet.

BTW I played Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed in 2008 yet they were both 2007 releases.  Assassin's Creed is one of my favorite games I played in 2008 but since it didn't come out in 2008 I'm holding it off this list.  If you haven't played it I recommend picking it up.
