December NPDs finally are here!!!
Obviously some people have money to spend on gaming. From the numbers below it was clearly another good December for the video games industry. Both Nintendo and Microsoft saw sales improvements compared to December of '07 on all of their game systems. The Wii managed to sell 2.15 million consoles which wasn't much more than last month. I tend to think this was caused by manufacturing contains rather than market saturation. Wii games dominated the top ten with five games making the list. The Wii managed to break 10 million consoles sold in 2008.
Microsoft had the number 2, 6 and 7 games on the list lead by call of Duty:World at War. The console exclusive Gears of War 2 and Left 4 Dead also had excellent second months at retailers. Gear 2 sold more copies this December than Halo 3 did last December. The Xbox 360 saw it's best December ever selling 1.44 million consoles. This drives the number of 360s sold in the US to 4.7 in 2008 and 13.8 since launch.
All three of Sony's game systems saw a drop in sales this December compared to 2007. The PS2 sold over one million consoles last year but this year only sold 410,000. This has to be expected since Sony has quietly started killing of the PS2. The PSP and PS3 has stayed fairly steady compared to last year but neither sold exceptionally well compared to their rivals. The PS3 sold 726,000 in December and finished 2008 with 3.5 million consoles sold.
December was a good month for console makers but may not have been so rosy for game publishers. There were less one million copy selling games this December with no new titles in the top 10. Several of the new IPs launched this holiday season did not perform well either. The shooter genera represented well along with the casual games. If your game featured killing zombies, underground monsters, Nazis or zombie Nazis your game sold well.
