Soar Thumbs

That is what I'm getting from playing Afro Samurai.  I tend to think that the games is a real button masher but does allow for some skill.  The game has a very extensive combo list that you will unlock as you gain experience.  Still for the majority of this game you can just spam the X and Y buttons and you'll get far in this game.  There are some very cool game play features that do make this game different than others.  As you build your combo meter you'll enable two different focus modes.

The first focus mode is accessed by pulling the left trigger and you'll be able to direct a killing strike.  You're not invincible in this mode so you can be knocked out of focus.  The second is accessed by holding down the left bumper.  This one slows time and allows you to deal a wide range of damage on several enemies.  This one's very nice but not available very often.  The next cool feature is you can enter focus mode to slice bullets or rockets.  I've kind of missed out on how this was explained but once someone shots at you you can enter focus and slice a bullet directing the ricochet at someone else.  This technique is not an easy one to master but you'll get some practice.

The game does have some warts that you can't hide from.  For some reason the developers decided to create a horrible camera system and not allow you to invert vertical view.  If I want to look left I should move the stick left, right?  Nope sorry.   It's funny that a game like Maw gets the camera right but Afro Samurai doesn't.  In addition to the combat sections of the game there are a couple platforming areas.  For the most part they are very simple and don't come up too often.  Still I tend to think these are common issues in 3D action games.  These issues just tend to made a pretty good game just good if you can get past the camera.

You add the high quality anime graphics with the already solid game play you end up with a very enjoyable game.  There are a few bosses that are a bit crazy to get past but once you figure out their secrete it's not too tough.  This game is definitely a hard M for it's mature content.  There is plenty of blood spilling, swearing, adult commentary and nudity to warrant it's M rating.  This game is based on a very mature anime series so the context should not be a surprise for anyone that has followed the tv show.
