The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

So I turned my PS3 on for the first time this year last night.  Well that's not entirely true, I did watch The Dark Knight on BluRay over holiday break.  Still I have not actually played a game on my PS3 in months.  That all changed yesterday when I got Little Big Planet in the mail from GameFly.  Now I had hear a lot of good things about Little Big Planet being the savior of the PS3 as the best game for the platform.  I was a bit intrigued to see how it played and if I could play it with my kids.

So before dinner I brought the kids down stairs to play a little while my wife cooked.  This was not a good idea.  Unlike game patches on the 360, PS3 patches take a long time to download and install.  Needless to say the game didn't finish applying the patches until we were called up for dinner.  By that time the kids had moved on to playing a game on the PC and had no interest what I was doing with the PS3.  They did manage to turn on both controllers though.

I finally got to play the game after bath time and the kids were in bed.  I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with the cuteness of the game.  The introduction of the game is a very guided level that shows you how to move, jump and customize your character.  I was really excited to play the game and once I got to then I couldn't get any further.  For some reason I was totally stuck and couldn't get to the next level.  After restarting the level and coming to the same spot and getting stuck I decided to go online and figure out what happened.  Fun thing about the PS3, the controllers will stay on till the battery dies.  So even though my daughter turned on a controller three hours ago, it was still on.  Upon turning off the controller I was able to get past this area and started to play the first two levels.

Playing the levels was very fun.  I heard that the president of Nintendo of America once said Little Big Planet looked like a game that should be a Nintendo system.  I'm sure in a back handed way that was a compliment (btw those Nintendo execs are crazy arrogant).  Playing Little Big Planet is just plain fun and will make you feel happy while playing.  Even after all the crap I had to put up with getting this game to run I felt great about the game once I put down the controller.  Little Big Planet is probably the closest I've come to playing a 3D Super Mario Bros game.  It's a side scrolling platformer where you run, jump and collect items.  I look forward to playing more and writing about my experiences.
