More On Afro Samurai
Now that I have completed the game and
watched the anime series that inspired Afro Samurai I feel I have a
better grasp of story. As one should expect the game and the movie hit
the same basic plot points but the game is more action based and draws
out these encounters. On my second play through I am noticing a lot
more of the details of the combat and how to handle each situation.
Afro Samurai is clearly a hard core action game made for people that
love the hack and slash style with over the top blood spouting like a
Kill Bill.
The anime series that inspired Afro Samurai was interesting to watch and filled in a lot of the missing pieces. I've been debating with myself over which medium does a better job telling the story of Afro Samurai. The game tells the story from Afro's point of view while the anime takes time to dig deeper into The Clan of the Empty Seven. The Empty Seven are a bit of a mystery in the game because they seems to be the ones in Afro's way as he searches for the Number 1. They are always present in the game but you just don't know what their role is except to slow you down.
In the anime you learn the Empty Seven is a cult that worships the Number 1 and Number 2 head bands. They seem to desire acquiring the headbands but don't have the skill to accomplish the task. They end up trying to study Afro's fighting style and use technology to create fighters of Afro's ability. It is the Empty Seven that save Jinno's life only to make him into Kumo.
From listening and reading to some of the hard core gaming outlets it's clear there are a few people that enjoy the game. If you're looking for a good review to check out 8bit joystick has a very good one on his site with screen shots and video. I also listened to the guys on Rebel FM podcast say some nice things about Afro Samurai. You can check out there site at Eat-Sleep-Game.
