Welcome to 2009, NPD

So it's that time of the month again...when I write about sales.  I tend to enjoy the NPDs because it's interesting to see what's selling and see what conclusions the tends lead to.  This is also my monthly post were I get to rip Sony for it's poor management of the PlayStation brand.  This month will not be an exception to the rule.

January 09 has been the best January for the Wii and the Xbox 360.  The Wii sold extremely well in January moving 679,000 consoles in the US.  Wii Fit, Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii continue to lead the games chart.  I noticed on Wednesday when I was in Best Buy that they place baskets on the ground in the Nintendo section of the store with a Wii, Wii Play and a nunchuck.  I guess they are making it very easy for consumers to figure out what's the best Wii bundle to buy.

Last year this time all we heard about was the Xbox 360 shortage at retail.  Those lost sales hurt Microsoft and benefited Sony.  It's very clear Microsoft wanted to make sure they had enough stock in the channel as they sold 309,000Xbox 360s last month.  With the economy in a rough place it seems Microsoft can be comforted in knowing they just had their best start of the year ever (360 and Xbox).

What can I say about Sony?  They still have the most expensive console by a cool $100 and don't seem to mind the fact their low end console is at the same price as the Xbox 360 when it launched three years ago.  There are no PS3 titles in the top ten in the US game charts and it seems Little Big Planet didn't save the PS3.  The net game to save the PS3 is Kill Zone which is out later this month.  Right now I don't think the lack of quality games is keeping people from buying a PS3, it's the cost.  Unless Sony drops the price to $349 or $299 soon you will not see significant sames of Killzone 2 in the US.
