Enjoying the Apocalypse in Fallout 3

It's been a full two months since I last blogged about Fallout 3 and I've probably done a complete 180 of my opinion of the game.  When I last blogged about the game I was stuck in this stupid side quest wandering the wasteland.  It was just a desolate, devastated landscape with very little worth checking out.  It seems I made a bad choice when I started playing Fallout 3, I should have stayed on the main quest but instead I went down a side quest that had me wondering the wasteland.

Before I get too far into my experience I should give some background on Fallout 3.  The world of Fallout 3 is an alternate reality that ended up being what people of the 1950s thought the future would be with personal robot butlers, fusion cars and it all coming to an end in 2077 with a nuclear war with China.  The game picks up in 2277 with you growing up in a fallout shelter. Your father, and only living parent, leaves the vault for the wastelands.  The game takes off when you decide to go after your father and escape the vault.

My one piece of advice for anyone picking up Fallout 3 is to skip the side quests till your level 3 or 4 because all you'll do is end up dieing a whole lot.  It wasn't till I decided to get back to the main quest that I start enjoying the game.  There is a whole world of caves and buildings to explore but it's better if you've got a little moreXP and learn how to use the VATS system to your advantage.

Some have called Fallout 3 "Oblivion with guns."  I can see the comparison except in Oblivion you were exposed to a beautiful expansive forest world to explore.  The only trees is Fallout 3 are burnt to a crisp.  The would is all crumbled buildings, monsters and rejects from Mad Max.  To fight the monsters and raiders you will get some guns so you better learn how to use them.  The VATS is an optional way to fight that makes the action of Fallout more turn based.  VATS allows you to save ammo by targeting you shots at specific enemies and body parts.  There is an AP meter that will be consumed as you select targets in VATS, once the targets are assigned and you shoot the AP goes down.  If you don't have enough AP you won't be able to assign targets in VATS.  Your AP will regenerate so you need to make sure you pick killing shots.  While you wait to regenerate AP you can fight in a FPS manner but you'll use up more ammo.

So far Fallout 3 is an excellent game that is definitely one of the best games from 2008.  It has sucked me in hard as I've been playing it exclusively for the past couple days.  This is one of those epic games that I can for see spending a hundred hours playing.  There is already new DLC for this game and I know there is another one being developed.  I'm about a third of the way though the main quest and I think I'm twenty hours into the game.
