Video Games still selling - February NPDs
I wonder if people have decided to hunker down and just play games
instead of dealing with life's little problems. The Wii has another
incredible month selling 753,000 units and has four titles in the top
ten games. The exercise game Wii Fit is on top of the charts selling
644,000 copies and has officially sold more copies than Halo 3. Street
Fighter 4 had a very successful return to consoles selling a combined
849,000 units on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Killzone 2 seems to be the
latest in Sony exclusive FPSs to fail to meet expectations at retail.
The folks at Microsoft have to be scratching their heads right now. The economy is in a slump right now but the Xbox 360 is have it's best start of the year ever. The Xbox 360 is solidifying it's position as the number 2 home console in the US by selling 391,000 units in February, a traditionally soft month. In act all three home console makers saw a jump in sales with the PS3 rounding out the group selling 276,000 units.
I think Microsoft has hit the ideal price point for their consoles. Ever since the price drop last September the Xbox 360 has sold at least 300,000 over the last seven months. The PS3 has yet to manage more than twoconsecutive months with sales above 300,000 units. It's clear that the pricing model the Xbox 360 has chosen to follow is finally paying dividends. With the rumor that the Xbox 360 elites being discontinued it's clear that the $199 and $299 models are the ones driving the 360's success. It's no surprise the Xbox 360 just surpassed the sales of the Xbox in the US, hitting 14 million units sold 22 months faster.
