Impression of The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai [Updated]
This game has been hyped by Microsoft for over a year as it was the
first XNA Dream-Build-Play winner. XNA is the software tools for anyone with a computer to create games that will run on your PC or Xbox 360. Last year Microsoft decided to hold a contest where anyone could enter to create a game. The best one was selected to become an official Xbox Live Arcade title.
The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai is a 2D side scrolled hack and slash where you play as a dead former dishwasher fighting cyborgs with guns, mechs and zombies. For the price of $10 you get a pretty full scale game with 14 single player levels and 50 arcade levels to play through. Considering this the work of one guy it's an impressive game.
As cool as the game is it a bit crazy difficult to play. I'm over half way through the game and I've had some challenging levels to get past. You get four continues on each level but once those are up you have to restart the level. It's a bit more hard core than most modern games. You will earn points you can spend to improve your character's health, magic attack, buy healing items and upgrade weapons.
The game has a bit of a Ninja Gaiden feel when it comes to difficulty but lacks the polish of a major title. For ten bucks you really can't go wrong with this title but it most likely will frustrate any casual gamer as the difficulty is balanced for the hard core. The demo is free so download the game and give it a try. It's a fun little hack and slash that offers a lot of game play.
