Quick Impressions of Wanted: Weapons of Fate
Talk about coming late to the party, this game came out in the Spring but I didn't pick it up till today. I had seen some previews of the game and it did look good but of course the reviews came out and it wasn't well received. Well I spotted the game at Best Buy for $25 so I decided to pick it up. Happened to be the last copy at the store I visited.
If you saw the Wanted movie with Angelina Jolie then you know what the game is about. The twist is this really isn't a movie game because the game covers events before and after the movie takes place. You will be splitting time between playing Wesley and his father, Cross. It's a nice addition to the movie for those that enjoyed the movie but never read the comic book.
The game play is a mix of the Gears of War cover mechanic and a solo mission in Rainbow Six. For the most part you are wielding a pistol and shooting fools in the head like crazy. Like in the movie, you will be able to bend bullets and will be required to shoot bullets out of the air. There are some nice slow-mo sections that reward perfectly bended shots. The game really does play like one would expect if you've seen the movie.
Unfortunately if this game was crazy awesome, like it sounds, then you would of heard of this game before now. Where the game fails is it feels a bit rushed. The cut scenes look great but the game could use some polish. In one scene, that I repeatedly played cause I kept failing, a body falls onto a glass door. Cool effect except that the blood splatter happens a second before the body hits the door. The game controls feel just a bit too stiff as well and I'd like to have the ability to adjust the aim more than the game allows.
There are a couple spots in the game were you are placed behind a turret and a shooting gallery ensues. These are probably placed in the game to add some variety but they really do suck. For the most part all you need to do is endure the rush and you will survive. They would have done better if they just allowed me to use the normal fighting mechanic in this situation.
Weapon of Fate really was a game that should have been a hit but turned out to be a flop because of poor development. If they would have spent another six months on the game and added a multiplayer mode this one might have taken off. Instead they released a short game that can be beaten in five hours. It's really too bad because the story is good and it's easy to enjoy if you liked the movie. I just don't see myself giving this game a second play through and I've almost beaten the game on the day I bought it. I would have beaten the game but I decided to write this post instead.
