Non-interventionism
This might seems like an off topic to write about now but it has been bubbling up more and more often for me. I am not a strict non-interventionist but I'm beginning to lean that way. I recently read George F. Will's op-ed on Afghanistan in the Post and also heard some discussion of the topic on the radio. One aspect of the discussion stuck with me: would 9/11 have occurred if the country had returned to it's roots of non-interventionism?
The question really has no right answer because it's impossible to know for sure. If the US would have stayed out of the Middle East after WWII,would we have been the brunt of so much terrorism? Did Carter's,Reagan's, Bush's and Clinton's actions lead to an attack? It's not like 9/11 should have been too much of a surprise. How many army barracks, US airliners or navel ships need to be attacked overseas before the American population opens their eyes to the the fruits of our meddling?
I tend to think it's time to pull our troops from foreign shores and reinvest in securing our boarders. We need to let the rest of the world fight their own battles and find their own solutions. We need to stop being power hungry control freaks that often only back the leaders that are good for us and not their populous. Lets take a page from our closest equal, China, and worry more about making our country stronger instead of some place across the ocean that could care less for our intervention.
