Racing Perfection

I happen to be a big video game racing fan.  I enjoy racing games just about as much as I enjoy a good FPS.  Maybe I even enjoy a great racing game more than any other genre of game.  There is something very pure about racing where it really is you against the world on a beautiful track listening to to your car purr as it goes 186 MPH.  In a good racing game I want the music sound track low and the car engine loud.

In an age when single play games can be beaten in an afternoon racing games have loaded their games with oodles of content.  Forza 3 is a man among children in the racing genre sporting 400 cars and 100 different track layouts on 24 different track sites.  There are 220 different events to compete in the career.  The depth of this game is unbelievable considering publishers now will hold content out of the retail disk just to sell it as DLC in a months time.

For this alone Forza 3 is worth buying again if you enjoyed the previous two releases.  Where Forza 3 will really wow you is in the improved graphics and game play options.  Simply put Forza 3 is by far the best looking and racing game on the market bar none.  If you think you know how to develop a great racing game or think you've experienced the truest racing then you need to pick up Forza 3.

The previous Foza games had the appeal of the casual but required the determination of the hard core to complete.  I was constantly retrying races to find the best car setup and undo mistakes I made in races.  I probably spent hours tuning cars in Forza 2 to get to the point where I could win the races.  The two biggest game play changes to Forza have been the ability to auto tune your can and to rewind within a race.  The ability to rewind was first put into a racing game by GRID I believe.  This allows you to undo a bad turn or accident so that you can attempt that situation again.  I find it a very nice feature to have considering some of the races in Forza can take a long time to complete.

For the tuners out there you can still go into any car and turn the car to your racing style.  For the more casual racing fans you can chose to quick tune your car which will automatically tune your car so that it will be competitive in the class you are racing.  In the early stages the quick tune will be very helpful and allow you to have cars that can easily win your stages.  As you progress I find that the racing gets more difficult and a quick tune may not be the best route to go.

If you just aren't very good at tuning cars you can always go to the online storefront in Forza 3 and purchase a tuning setup using currency earn from races.  There you will find multiple tuning setups published by members of the community.  The store front also has car designs for sale and allows you to upload your own car designs and tunings to be purchased.  There are tons of cool designs to find because some people prefer to paint their cars instead of race them.

Once you've got a car in your garage you will be allowed to customize not only the tuning of the car but also the external appearance.  There are several shapes you can apply to your car and some people are absolutely amazing at taking these shapes and making works of art.  It's beyond my ability to do that but I do play around and have a distinct customization I apply to all of the cars I race.

It's hard to not love Forza 3 because is really is the best racing game ever made.  Playing this game is just pure joy for me.  I love just listening to the car's engine and tires as I race though some of the most beautiful tracks on earth.  Give the game a try, there is a free demo on Xbox Live so you can experience it as well.
