Rooted my Hero
I'm pretty sure that title will make absolutely no sense to 99% of the people that read my blog. My Hero is my HTC Hero phone I bought last November, rooting is to take control of the phone as the super user aka "root" so you can have full access to the phone's resources. Why would one ever want to root their phone?
Thankfully there are online communities that thrive on making roms for the android phones. If you have an android phone, there is probably a custom rom you could install on your phone. I found plenty of information on the androidcenral.com forums to help me through rooting my phone and installing a custom rom. I'm pretty happy with the process. I did backup all the system apps and my downloaded apps before I rooted my phone so I easily restored the apps I wanted.
Good question. I rooted to install a new rom. I did it again...rom in this case is the phone's firmware. In this case, think of it as installing a custom operating system build on the core os but with nice bells and whistles. I installed a rom based on the leaked Android 2.1 with Sense UI for the HTC Desire. The rom cookers modified the rom to be able to run on my phone.

I think that rooting your phone is probably the best option for those that want the most out of their phone. If you use a stock rom it will be limited to what was baked into the rom by the carrier. You can't uninstall that nascar app and it may have some bugs that kill your phone's performance. It's also better than waiting for you carrier to approve the upgrade which can get very annoying.
